Prologue

The year was 2032. Mankind had finally done it. Peace reigned supreme across the globe. It was a long, hard fought battle, but finally, it had arrived. Oh sure, there were still some that fomented discontent. After all, hate and envy are two emotions that can never be quite stamped out, but by and large, the planet was at peace. Countries willingly worked together for the benefit of all mankind, and all the peoples of the world lived together in almost perfect harmony.
But, as the old saying goes, no true good deed ever goes unpunished. Within a few years of the last treaty being signed, we discovered we were not alone in the universe. We shared it with other sentient races…

The Kra’Nall were detected by man when they arrived in a task force of 100 huge ships, each about the size of a modern day football stadium (in fact, they looked a lot like a large, domed stadiums). They settled into an orbit all around the Earth, and, without warning, ignoring all attempts to communicate, they attacked.
The Kra’Nall had discovered the Earth in a routine survey mission and were astonished at the richness of the planet (on their world salt was highly coveted for a variety of reasons, and here our planet was literally covered with the stuff), plus the lush vegetation and the animal life, including the humans... There was enough here to feed the Kra’Nall for generations.

As a bonus, it appeared that the inhabitants of the Earth were non-violent. To be sure, a recon team was dispatched to monitor the system from orbit for a period of 6 months. No wars or combat of any kind was detected. In fact, not even weapons testing was detected. The Kra’Nall were estatic. It would be a simple matter to subjugate the relatively primitive (by their standards) people and begin hauling the rich harvest off the planet. It should be mentioned that the Kra (as they came to be called on Earth) are a very warlike people, bent on genetic purity and perfection. They were looking forward to using humans both as slave labor, and as a food source.
The results of the recon were delivered to the homeworld and a plan of attack was instituted. It was decided to use standard infantry tactics, in order to preserve as much of the planet as possible. The ships were dispatched, and the attack began…

The humans were caught completely off guard, and the early victories for the Kra were smashing in nature. Entire cities fell within days, as the humans struggled to ramp up a military that was almost non existent. Almost being the operative word.
Armies were assembled, great weapons were uncovered, nuclear, biological, chemical and even nanotech weapons were deployed in a desperate attempt to defeat the incoming hordes. The Kra, committed to the attack due to dwindling supplies on their homeworld, and their own inflated egos, poured troops (both Kra’Nall, and of their Servitor Races) into the fight. The humans, back to the wall, did the same. Each side deploying more and more powerful (and earth shattering) weapons against the other. The carnage was unimaginable.

Within just a few months it was all over. 90% of the planet was unlivable. Great cities that had stood for a thousand years, were reduced to rubble. Man was a hunted animal, living in the dark places, eking out a living any way he could. The Kra were smashed beyond any hope of recovery, as the final desparate act of mankind had been the release of a viral agent geared to destroy their ability to reproduce. The virus made it back to the homeworld before it was detected, and ensured that not one, but two planets were destroyed.
And so it descended upon man… The Dark. The sun was hidden from the few remaining denizens of earth, as dust and ash filled the heavens. Temperatures plunged in some places, while volcanic activity, stirred up by massive “bunker buster” type nuclear blasts, roasted others. Man was pushed to the brink of extinction.

Years passed… generations passed. The Dark reigned supreme. Man was hanging on by his fingernails, as were all the other beasts of the land (and air… and sea). But Mother Nature is a strong and loving mother. And no matter how badly her children have treated her, she never turned her back on them. As the days turned into years, then into decades, and finally into centuries… the earth began to recover. Plants grew again, birds flew again, other things flew and grew as well, and finally, Man poked his head out of the hovels of dirt and rock, and began to walk upright again. Or at least some did…
Many things have changed, but mankind was not snuffed out, nor were many animal and plant species. Some developed stronger survival skills, better fighting skills, or even, better hiding skills. Others, affected in ways no one could have predicted by the radiation, viral and nanotech agents, developed traits unlike any of their species… in some cases, traits never before seen in nature.

You and your party will adventure out into this world, attempting to make it your own. Be careful though, as even the most innocuous of creatures can suddenly become the deadliest of foes… and of course there are still places where no sane man would tread.
But without daring, what will be your fate?
